Fairytales and theme AND 100 followers!!!

First off, I am so excited to finally have 100 followers!!! Woot, Woot!!!

My fourth graders are working on a mini unit about fairytales.  We read James Marshall's Cinderella first to understand the narrative elements of the story. Then we discussed theme.  This continues to be a tough concept for them.

The next day we read The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo and discussed narrative elements and theme.  We are really trying to support our answers with text evidence, which they struggle with.  We discussed what phrases they could use to show the reader they are using text evidence which helped them to respond to another Cinderella story later in the week.

The following day we compared and contrasted these two versions of Cinderella, including their themes, pattern of events, and topics, a common core standard. They did pretty well with our Venn diagram activity.  I was planning on having the kids read different versions within groups and then share their Venn diagrams, but we never received the extra copies of Cinderella books from other libraries. So, plan B it was.

I love this mini unit and the kids do too, even the boys!  Next week we are looking at Little Red Riding Hood and Roald Dahl's poem as well.  I can't wait! :)

Oh, and our student teacher starts on Tuesday too!

3 more until 100 followers!

I know this doesn't seem like a big deal, but I am so excited that I am 3 away from 100 followers. I started blogging last February, but really didn't do much until this summer. I have been sporadic, but love following bloggers and learning so much.  So, I guess I should have a giveaway or something.  Any ideas on what to do for it?

Today was our first day back after Winter break.  It was a crazy day, starting off with a Regional Math Assessment and then some of our classes.  We started new unit on types of Tales.  We read a legend and discussed the elements.  The kiddos were also introduced to dialogue and will be doing a few fun activities in the next few days.  Tomorrow is another Regional Assessment; mine, the ELA one! Oh, fun!  :)

Currently for January 2013!!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you have a great 2013! This is my first time linking up for the Currently from Oh Boy 4th Grade!

I am amazed by her and many other blogs, so I'm giving this a try!  Here is my January Currently:

Unfortunately, like many of you out there, today is my last day of vacation! I have had a wonderful break spending time with my family as my husband had off a bunch of days too.  We went to Build-a-Bear Workshop with the girls, went sledding, played in the snow, did projects around the house, and just had a wonderful break! I hope you and your family had a great break as well.  Now, off to finish up plans and start on a few new books before the craziness starts back up tomorrow.
